Take your yoga practice to the next level in 2020! Firelight Yoga is a Registered Yoga School (RYS) with Yoga Alliance, and our upcoming 200-hour teacher training is perfect for those with a busy schedule. We train on the weekends (Friday evening through Sunday evening) over the course of the 11 weeks. Free unlimited yoga classes at our studio are included throughout the training and we encourage you to take as many classes as you would like to fully immerse yourself in the experience. The final weekend of the training will include the graduation ceremony and dinner celebration!

Our teacher training schedule is perfect for those who prefer to learn at a slower pace and take in the richness of the experience one day at a time. Whether you are interested in Yoga Teacher training to teach others, or to simply deepen your own practice and understanding, our multi-disciplinary program will introduce you to the many facets of yoga. Completion of this program is an incredible achievement!

In this Vinyasa-focused program, you will develop a strong working understanding of yoga alignment, meditation, anatomy and yogic philosophy. You will know how to teach classes for all types of students and how to integrate traditional yoga teachings with practical techniques for the modern-day student. This is an opportunity to learn a varied, unique, and valuable skill set that will enrich your life as a human being and open many doors both personally and professionally. Yoga Teacher training is one of the most valuable investments you can make in your life, and we hope you will join us!

Course Content

Teaching Methodology

We will guide you through multiple hands-on approaches that make the material real, and applicable to teaching yoga to the general public. You will gain extensive knowledge on how to safely provide a well-rounded and mindful yoga class to all students including those who are beginners, have an injury or are advanced practitioners.

Pranayama & Meditation

You will learn about the science of breathing, called Pranayama. It is an essential part to create integrity in the brain, glands, nervous system and internal organs. We will begin most sessions with meditation to encourage your development of a personal daily meditation practice that you can carry on after our training time is complete.

Asana Practice and the Art of Sequencing

You will gain the tools to design a comprehensive yoga class and build thoughtful sequences, as well as be able to deliver them clearly to your future students. Over the course of our 11 weeks together, you will get comfortable with public speaking, offering correct hands on assists and giving anatomical cues. As you further on your teaching journey, your own personal practice will continue to build.

Philosophy, Ethics & Lifestyle

This training is more of a “work-in” than a “work-out.” We will open our hearts and focus our awareness so that we can cultivate an authentic voice, powerful message, and powerful asana. You will learn how to apply ancient yogic principals and practices to your modern-day life and class instruction.

Personal Practice & Exploration

We will spend memorable and meaningful time getting to know our mats between practicing, meditating, teaching, and centering. When you emerge on the other side of this training, your personal yoga practice and consciousness will be incredibly tuned-in and turned-on. This training will help you to cultivate a strong sense of identity, develop your skill set as a new yoga teacher, and give you ample space to explore your Mind-Body-Spirit connection in new and exciting ways! You will create some incredibly rewarding bonds, so be prepared to go through an awakening within yourself. Physically. Mentally. Spiritually. Emotionally.

The Business of Yoga

Whatever your goals, the reality is that teaching yoga can be a challenging career path, this is why we have set aside time in your training to prepare you. We will help you create a resume, get comfortable with auditioning, and set you up for ultimate success. You will have the support, structure, and community of your trainers and cohorts to discuss and find answers to any questions you have. Completion of this course will lead to a successful transition from training to teaching.

You will establish a large base of anatomical knowledge in relation to yoga postures and safe application. This will happen by listening to personal stories, going through the anatomy of the skeleton, muscular structure and soft tissue knowledge. You will pick up in-depth knowledge to take to the mat to fine-tune and deepen your practice, as well as your teaching.

Yoga Alliance requires a minimum of 5 hours, or 300 minutes, of practicum. Each teacher trainee will be given a minimum of 570 minutes (or 9.5 hours) to lead instruction in small groups, giving you that much more time and experience teaching than what is minimally required. For trainees who are interested, up to two additional “karma”or free/community classes can be arranged with lead trainers following completion of the training to have those opportunities to instruct classes to our general studio community in any one of the following class modalities: Vinyasa Flow, Power Flow, Hot Vinyasa, Gentle Flow, Hot FLY60, and/or Hot FLY80.

Meet Your Trainers

Jessica Bartley, E-RYT 200, YACEP and Firelight Yoga Co-Owner

About eight years ago, I was burnt-out with my career path as a Registered Nurse and felt uneasy in my body. I was struggling with depression and anxiety on a daily basis, and I was not sure what to do. Gratefully, yoga found me exactly when I needed it, and my practice truly saved my life at that time. Through my practice and subsequent training-in and teaching-of yoga, I have cultivated a calmness and simple joy for life that has brought more peace, happiness, and satisfaction than I ever thought possible. Yoga has helped me find strength from within myself to push through the difficult times with faith and trust that the Universe has my back whenever I act or think from a place of love and clear intentions. Yoga has helped me to overcome my fears and doubts through opening our studio nearly five years ago and manifesting this collective dream of our community at Firelight Yoga, and Holly and I are so excited to bring you this 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training and embark on this life-changing journey with you!

Holly Bussmus, E-RYT 200, YACEP and Firelight Yoga Co-Owner

Shortly after starting a consistent yoga practice over 8 years ago, I knew that I would eventually teach others. My practice and training experience has been transformative in all aspects of my life. I knew I needed a major change in my life and the practice of yoga brought me the clarity I needed to make change happen. I completed my 200-hour training with my best friend, Jessica Bartley and we began our plans for our own studio almost immediately. After teaching for about 3 years, we opened Firelight Yoga in Portland, Oregon in January of 2015. Since then, we’ve had the opportunity and privilege of hosting two, 200-hour yoga teacher trainings. The 2020 training will be our third and I hope to inspire and help bring about the same life-changing practice to you, that brought so much joy and awareness into my everyday life. The dream of opening Firelight Yoga and this opportunity to share yoga with our community, fills my heart with gratitude.

Heather Anetsberger, E-RYT 500, YACEP

Over the years I have been influenced by a variety of different environments, teachers and trainings and it has shaped the person I am today. I continue to study the practice of yoga daily so that my teachings can come through as authentic and informed. My style greatly consists of hands-on assists, motivation through message and creative sequencing. I strive to bring every student to the mat and challenge them with a powerful source of asana, where each individual can find their own balance between effort and ease. My goal is to provide my students with the tools to tune in to the present moment by challenging their physical selves. Every person, teacher and students included, should leave the room feeling challenged physically, spiritually or emotionally.

In the teacher training at Firelight Yoga, you will not only gain the tools to teach an intelligently sequenced yoga class, but also dive deeper into your own personal yoga practice where you will experience a sense of self and belonging. I cannot wait to spend 11 weeks with you this coming winter and spring!

Katie DiPasquale, E-RYT 200, YACEP

I began practicing yoga in my early 20’s after moving to Portland from the Midwest. Life as a young executive in the corporate world created a need for an outlet to burn off energy, stress and manage my growing anxiety. The combination of the heat, sweat, music, strength training, cardio and mindfulness pushed me further than I had been willing to push but quieted my mind and made me feel strong. I began yoga teacher training on a whim in 2015 and have been practicing, teaching and learning ever since. I have a wide array of experience having working with all different students from beginners to athletes in the states and also internationally. My classes focus on logical sequencing that build in intensity. My goal is to leave students feeling pushed past their comfort zones but also successful. My hope is students leave my classes having learned something and also with inspiration- goals to keep working towards. I am serious when I teach but also try to the make hard work fun.
I am so excited to be a part of the FLY Yoga Teacher Training! I have experience coaching in Teacher Training and have enjoyed helping “up and coming” teachers find their style and voice.

Rachel Walsh, E-RYT 500, YACEP

My name is Rachel Walsh and I am a yoga instructor currently teaching in Portland, Oregon. I am an 800RYT and 500 E-RYT as well as a YACEP (Yoga Alliance Certified Educational Provider) trained & certified in Hatha & Vinyasa yoga traditions. I have been teaching public & private classes for almost 2 decades here in the U.S. and in the U.K. I have counted the classes & it adds up to over 14,000 hours! In 2004, I completed my first YTT, a 500 hour Master program at Yoga Pura in Phoenix, Arizona with Yogacharya Eric Walrabenstein, and then my Yoga Nidra Facilitator certification through Yoga Pura and Kamini Desai, Director of the Amrit Institute, in 2010. I have taught classes, retreats and workshops all over the world including Phoenix, San Diego, Boston, London, Portland, NYC and a few other cities. I remind my students that our bodies are made to feel good and that there is nothing more important. I’ve been teaching classes at FLY since summer of 2015 and have come to appreciate that this really is the best yoga community in all of PDX because of the love, dedication and connection that you can truly feel when you walk through the door. It’s what keeps our students coming back and it’s why our teachers stay for years. I am so excited for you and so looking forward to sharing my passion and knowledge with you in our upcoming FLY YTT!! When I am not at the studio teaching classes or behind the front desk greeting students, you can find me either with my nose in a book & my cat on my lap, on my way to a live music celebration of some sort, or laughing with friends in the amazing and beautiful Pacific NW.
